Dr. Cheryl Carter founded Gnōsis Services to assist student service professionals in the design of virtual services for college students. She is the Principal Consultant for Cheryl Carter Consulting, a career counseling and educational consulting firm located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
For over 20 years, Dr. Carter has worked as a student services professional collaborating with numerous student service divisions including Admissions, Financial Aid, Disabled Student Services, Transfer Center, Tutoring, Veterans Affairs and EOPS. Her innovative, cutting-edge work with social technologies and immersive virtual environments has provided a contemporary approach to the design of student support services.
Dr. Carter has presented at conferences and events sponsored by the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), California Community College Online Teaching Conference, International Association K-12 for Online Learning (iNACOL), American Educational Research Association (AERA), and The Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C).
Her presentation topics have included: Online Counseling Tools, Social Networking & Second Life: Uses for E-Learning (with Dr. Lisa Dawley), Exploring UC Campuses Virtually, Introducing Your Real Life Students to Second Life, and Does Technology Improve Student Learning and Success?
She holds Masters Degrees in Counseling (Career Development) and Kinesiology and has a doctoral degree in Educational Technology.
